First Annual Playwriting Workshop - June 10-11, 2006
"High Stakes in Character, Conflict and Action" - a Workshop in Playwriting with Arlene Hutton
Florida and Tennessee playwrights had the opportunity to revise, rewrite and rework a script and/or scenes with the guidance of Arlene Hutton, published and widely produced playwright and workshop leader. Through exercises, readings, questioning and idea sharing, the critical dramatic elements of character, conflict and action were explored. Then all participants became audience members for a reading of Stacey Lane's new play, which is being developed for a fully-staged production in September.
Reading - June 11, 2006
A Thousand Variations on a Lie Told Once was given a developmental reading in the storied Fred Stone Theatre at Rollins College on June 11, 2006. Playwright Stacey Lane was in town to attend two rehearsals and receive audience feedback. An enthusiastic crowd laughed and cried and gave Director Kathleen Lindsey and the cast high marks for the performance. New York based playwright Arlene Hutton facilitated the talkback, where Stacey learned more about audience reactions in order to rework her script for the world premiere cast.

WPI was a guest theater at PlayFest 2006! The Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays which brought a world of drama to Central Florida, February 8-19, 2006. Our reading introduced theatergoers to Sweepstakes by Janet Burroway in two readings at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center's Mandell Studio Theatre: Wednesday Feb 15 at 6pm, and Saturday Feb 18 at 2:30pm. The Tallahassee playwright was at each performance to receive audience feedback.

DO'S & DONUTS, a comedy by Linda Treiber was presented as a Staged Reading to about 50 people at the Orlando Repertory's Lobby Stage on October 18, 2005. Last year, WPI began the tradition of giving its first runner-up a Fall reading, and again this year, we combined the Reading with a Silent Auction featuring works by area artists. Doors opened at 7pm for the Silent Auction Fundraiser; the Reading began at 7:30pm. "Two North Carolina sisters fight the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune in this southern fried who-donut." Principal actors were John DiDonna, Marty Stonerock, Rhonda Day, Amy Brackel, and Roger Greco.

What they're saying about WPI
Thanks for the opportunity to bring Sheri's play to life. I had a very strong connection with that script and very much enjoyed working on it. WPI has a great mission and is doing a wonderful service for new playwrights. I hope WPI continues to grow and thrive.
Lani Harris
Director, Orabelle's Wheelbarrow
I'm with you in spirit, and we'll keep waving the WPI flag in determination to put women's voices where they belong!

I feel like I'm getting a crash-course in theatre production at the same time I'm improving my play... As a fiction writer, I'm accustomed to working alone, but the staged reading gave me a chance to hear my words in a new way... Working with the Women Playwrights' Initiative team has taught me more
than I could have learned in a hundred classrooms. Thank you for your guidance and for your belief in Orabelle's Wheelbarrow.
Sheri Reynolds
Emerging Playwright and Novelist
WPI's comments have helped me so much. Some LA producers (in town for fundraising) heard about (my play) Jimmy Earl. I was already revamping it because of WPI, and now they are coming to my house Friday to meet me and pick up the script. Thank you. I never thought I would get this close to a producer. I will be forever indebted to WPI for the nudge.

I must tell you what an enjoyable procedure you put me through, bringing my play to life! I am now looking forward to finishing the new final scene. I applaud you for giving women playwrights a chance to be heard. I am indeed grateful for all you did for me and my play.
Barbara Kreher
Playwright
Have a great year. I wish you nothing but great success. Theatre is having a resurgence. I can feel it in the air. May you all benefit from it.
Judith Montague
Playwright and friend of WPI
I enjoyed seeing the staged reading of Driven to Abstraction at the recent PlayFest. I found the staged reading and its talkback to be stimulating and fun. The spirited exchange among audience, directors and actors was intellectually invigorating. I LOVED that part of it. I'll be interested to see the evolution of this promising play.
